About this ebook

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A big sweeping novel of friendship and marriage” (The Washington Post) by the celebrated author of The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini

Leopold Bloom King has been raised in a family shattered—and shadowed—by tragedy. Lonely and adrift, he searches for something to sustain him and finds it among a tightly knit group of outsiders. Surviving marriages happy and troubled, unrequited loves and unspoken longings, hard-won successes and devastating breakdowns, as well as Charleston, South Carolina’s dark legacy of racism and class divisions, these friends will endure until a final test forces them to face something none of them are prepared for.

Spanning two turbulent decades, South of Broad is Pat Conroy at his finest: a masterpiece from a great American writer whose passion for life and language knows no bounds.

“A lavish, no-holds-barred performance.”The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

“A lovely, often thrilling story.”The Dallas Morning News

“A pleasure to read . . . a must for Conroy’s fans.”—Associated Press

Pat Conroy hit another homerun! The allure of the south has never been stronger as you can see, hear and taste it through Conroy's descriptive prose. The characters in this novel are developed so well that they will become a part of you. Conroy is the best at using descriptive language and imagery! A must read.

Reading South of Broad was like watching the sunset on an old plantation porch, sipping a mint julep. Maybe my comparison is too formulaic, but Pat Conroy's novel has all the charm of the South mixed with many of its evils. The pace of the writing, like the South, is a little slower, and some of the characters are a bit exaggerated. However, nothing dampened the joy I had reading this book. Conroy is brilliant at making the setting a significant backdrop for the characters and Charleston is the perfect city for this story. I highly reccomend South of Broad. It would make a great summer read!

What a bitter disappointment. Mr. Conroy could have made a beautiful coming of age novel had he simply stayed the course with young Leo in the town he loved, finally coming into his own...But he didn't. Has Pat ever actually met a homosexual? And who talks like that? Was Jackie Collins his ghost writer?
