About this ebook

Divorce a husband, disrupt a career ... grapple with a murder.

TV journalist Elizabeth "E.M." Danniher will tell you she committed two sins — she didn't stay young, and she made an enemy of a powerful news executive — her ex. She used to break national news. Now her top story as the “Helping Out!” reporter at dinky KWMT-TV in Sherman, Wyoming is getting a defective toaster repaired.

Soon she's in a battle of wills with ex-football player turned journalist Mike Paycik. Does he see her as a handy rung on his career ladder, a potential partner in fighting crime, or something more? And there's the matter of a deputy sheriff – missing or murdered? Elizabeth finds herself investigating at the insistence of a little girl doesn’t so much ask for help as demand Elizabeth proves her father's innocence. Not that enigmatic rancher Thomas Burrell makes investigating easy.

She, Mike, and more colleagues heat up this cold case fast, learning Cottonwood County’s secrets.

Tough, funny, and determined, Elizabeth wrestles with isolation, keeping a professional edge, an evolving self-image . . . oh,, yes, and a rental unaffectionately known as the Hovel and a standoffish stray dog. Is Wyoming — the land of cattle, cowboys, tumbleweeds, and fewer than six people per square mile — her new home or a road to permanent obscurity?

Elizabeth won't fade to black without a fight, no matter how final some might want to make her Sign Off.

An intriguing mystery with a great cast of characters. The story kept me interested all the way, and the hints of a new romance were fun to follow. I'll be reading the next one.

Being the sensitive type, I am always nervous of reading suspenseful novels. The cover of this book seemed to indicate that I would be biting my nails and dreading reading the next page. However, Sign Off is a well written, well thought out detective novel that kept me engrossed. Journalist Elizabeth has got on the wrong side of her ex and not only loses her marriage but finds herself relegated to the wilds of Wyoming. There she is viewed with suspicion by her co-workers until she is faced with an eight-year old girl who demands her help. Elizabeth's first response is to step away from the problem, but Mike Paycik basically tricks her into becoming involved in the case. Part investigative journalism and part detective work, Elizabeth discovers that in the small town of Sherman, she doesn't have to look for a story, the story finds her. The layers start to peel off bringing about new revelations and exposing secrets, thereby generating enough anger amongst the residents to make Elizabeth wary. Mike would like to become romantically involved with Elizabeth, but she's already been scorched by working relationships and has no intention of going down that path again. The story is therefore clean and exciting and comes to a very satisfactory ending. There is a good mix of wit and suspense, making this a very enjoyable read.

This was a free ebook I picked up from Google Play one night when I couldn't sleep. I must say I really enjoyed it & it ended up being quite a quick read in between moving house. :P I love the character E.M. Danniher & the fact that the story is written from her point of view - from the outside looking in. Held my interest throughout, with its little twists and turns. I look forward to reading more in the series.
