I've read through most of the series but sadly couldn't even get more than a few chapters into this trilogy. I loved the first six books, was somewhat interested in the third trilogy, but these ones lost me. this one seems to disregard the rules set by the past books. One major rule being that Vir Requis grow weak and insane the longer they remain human and don't shift. In this book apparently they can now never shift with no consequences removing one of the weaknesses of a major species. Also what drew me to this series was the dragons and within the first few chapters it became clear the Vir Requis were evil now and that the "good" Vir Requis were now playing it human. It just doesn't feel original anymore and I regret not reading the reviews before buying.

I didn't realise it was possible for someone to make a race a of dragons boring. The characters have absolutely no qualities worth mentioning. They are forgettable. The tine spent by the author describing the surroundings makes me believe he should be designing sets for plays or movies than the weak attempt at writing dialogue. UPDATE: I cannot finish this book, it's too awful, and unfortunately refunds on e-books are not allowed. If you love dragons then please do not waste your time with this.

Not very good. Frustratingly, many of the ideas are very interesting and the world building solid. The characters are flat, however, with a YA level of complexity. The action starts immediately but it's forever before our protagonists, Tilla being a partial exception, have their characters tested in a way that shows their uniqueness. And God, there's just a ton of pandering --romance subplots (painfully shallow and redundant), gratuitous violence, and lots of rapey lust (any brand of gratuitous imagery or cruel behavior should be balanced and earned by it being essential to the story, in my opinion). The author shows a talent for some things -- descriptions of fiery dogfights and varying female characters (rewarding and interesting without any particular agendas). The level of redundancy and lack of attention to developing complex stakes and rich characterization leaves the first book's greatest accomplishment being the number of cool things that happen (cartoonishly in most cases). I'm as addicted to novel fantasy series as the next guy but just can't recommend this one.

About the author

Daniel Arenson is a bestselling author of epic fantasy.

Three of his trilogies--Song of Dragons, Dragonlore, and The Dragon War--are set in Requiem, a world where humans can turn into dragons. He's also the author of Moth, a series about a world torn in two--its one half always in sunlight, the other always dark. Several of Daniel's novels have hit Amazon's overall Top 100 bestsellers list; one has hit the Top 20. In total, his books have sold over 300,000 copies.

Raised on Dungeons & Dragons, Lord of the Rings, and scratchy Star Wars VHS tapes, Daniel still consumes--and tries to contribute to--geek culture. He lives in Canada with his wife and pet birds.
