Don't Mean a Thing

I really enjoyed this story... Don't Mean a Thing is the first story in the Got That Swing series. I really enjoyed this story about love, live, and dance. The characters are charming, well developed, and likable. The storyline is well written and flows nicely, with military life, drama, jealousy, swing dance, and a sweet romance. Macie Harman, in her early 30s, is finally doing what she wants to do for herself! She has dumped her negative and controlling boyfriend, quit her retail job, and joined the military! No man was going to stand in her way again! Now she is heading for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) to begin her new career. The taxi took her to the base and Rachael, the only person she knew so far from training, picked her up in her car to take her to register and settle in her room. The accommodations were not spectacular, but she would get by. Macie’s sister had suggested she join something to help her meet people and have fun since the bars were of no interest to her. She found a Swing Dance group and signed up. She took a run on the beach, trying to improve her time, and passed the dance class. When she returned to her car to stretch, a handsome guy, introducing himself as Matt, came up and invited her to join them at the dance class. She declined but said she would come the following Wednesday. She did that and learned a few steps. She also met more people and danced. Matt was a wonderful dancer and she enjoyed being with him. When he went to get them water, an earlier partner of his, Nadiene, let her know she and Matt were together. But Macie could still dance with him and that was fine with her. When Macie and Matt went to the Wednesday lesson class, he asked her afterward to get a coffee and walk on the jetty. When she answered that Nadiene would not like that, he shrugged it off as something that didn’t matter! He kept trying to find out why she turned cold to him, so she commented on his “girlfriend”. He assured her he didn’t have one. Nadiene was merely his assigned partner for the performance troupe. He asked her again to walk with him, and this time she agreed. They were friends, right? She made sure to keep her hands wrapped around her coffee cup and not on his arm. This was such a good book, the style of writing quickly pulling the reader into the story. The details were such that it felt like real places surrounded the reader. The characters were so well described that they, too, came alive on the pages! The strong love of family could be felt when Macie and Emily chatted on the phone. And best of all, I loved watching Macie and Matt ever-so-slowly fall in love. This is a wonderful book for anyone wanting a slow-burn romance with likable, realistic characters. The best way to describe the story line is totally comfortable.
