There's more to the latest planet than meets the eye. If only Jas could convince the captain of the need for caution, but she might as well wish for a tasty meal in the ship's canteen.

I really enjoyed this 3 pack of novels. I found the plot to move at a pleasantly fast pace. The main characters were well fleshed out and I enjoyed getting to know them. Well written heroes always have flaws they need to overcome so that they can then overcome their trials and the protagonist has some serious flaws that really make her trials very challenging! Overall, this was a great read and I'm looking forward to reading through the rest of the series. I'll give a vague summary below to not spoil too much of the story. Well recommended! The Galathea Chronicles follow the story of Jas Harrington, a security officer aboard a survey ship in a future where corporations seem to be the ones that are running the show. The survey ship has the task of searching unexplored systems and planets for exploitable resources for a cut of whatever they find. Ms. Harrington's job is to initially survey the situation until she is sure that everyone will be safe. Of course, commissioned type compensation creates a natural conflict between speed and safety, one that this series of books exploits very well. The initial story focuses on that very conflict inside of the ship. The captain and many of the crew dislike Harrington's caution and are always pushing to move forward. Add to that a captain with unsavory motives and the tension ratchets right up. Although her instincts tell her that something is seriously wrong with the situation on their latest target planet, the lack of conclusive evidence leads her premonitions to be ignored. Of course, disaster ensues and this leads to a very exciting adventure with a few unexpected twists! The second story moves the plot along but expands its scope. Not only faced with an impossible situation , the crew led by Ms. Harrington now faces the enemy and it is far more frightening that initially expected. I really enjoyed this particular alien enemy, its aspect is quite sinister and it's immediately obvious that overcoming it will be very challenging. There is a lot of action as this part of the story develops and the conclusion (which leads to the next book of course) left me thinking..."Wait...NOO!". Story #3 lays out the groundwork of moving the threat from one isolated planet to threatening the universe and manages this without being cheesy or melodramatic. A big part of my enjoyment was that the story doesn't take itself too seriously, there is time to have a little fun and even to do a little preaching as the overall plot line is laid out. With the threat reaching galactic levels, I'm very interested in seeing how things continue to develop. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
