About this ebook

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • COMING SOON TO APPLE TV+ • A “mind-blowing” (Entertainment Weekly) speculative thriller about an ordinary man who awakens in a world inexplicably different from the reality he thought he knew—from the author of Upgrade, Recursion, and the Wayward Pines trilogy

“Are you happy with your life?”

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the kidnapper knocks him unconscious.

Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before a man he’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college professor but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this life or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how will Jason make it back to the family he loves?

From the bestselling author Blake Crouch, Dark Matter is a mind-bending thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

Starts out very strong. You are drawn in, and like the character and life he has created. Something horrible happens to him and he becomes a prisoner in a world similar to his but is not his. His escape is the low point in the story. It dragged on, and was not believable. Instead of stopping at this point I decided due to how strong the book started out I would scim read. Glad I stuck it out because from a little past the mid point it picks up again. It was an OK read.

This book was intriguing to me, and the synopsis really does not do any justice as to what the book is actually about. There are some parts that drag on quite a bit, but overall it was a decent read. It really gives you insight that sometimes the road less traveled is less traveled for a reason. I wouldn't so much call it a suspense or a thriller as much as a sci-fi really. By far not my favorite book, but it's worth a read.

It is a story that employs words like "quantum physics" and "Schrödinger's cat" to explain why a man is THE CENTER of his multiverse (or "maleverse"), everyone else especially his wife and kid exist for him, trapping a woman with a kid in a marriage is a "sacrifice" deliberately made by a man for "love", and it is because of that a man wants to dedicate more time to his wife and kid not because of he is simply incapable if he doesn't win Nobel Prize. It has a few unnecessary drinking and sex scenes at the beginning, then a lot of chase scenes, just like most TV/movie drama. It might help some readers to understand the meaning of human reproductive activities to most men in the world.
