Elizabeth Wetmore’s debut novel is a force of nature—much like the women who populate its pages. Set in 1976, in the dusty, onetime boomtown of Odessa, Texas, the story is narrated by a rotating cast of female narrators, including 14-year-old Glory Ramírez, whose brutal rape exposes a local wellspring of racism and misogyny. Wetmore, a West Texas native, delivers an unsentimental depiction of an often brutal landscape ruled by white men and oil rigs. Her intimately drawn characters give voice to the rage, grief, and unexpected redemption that follow a horrific crime. Unflinching and hugely accomplished, Valentine is an absolute knockout.

Wetmore's stirring debut follows a group of women as they find the strength to survive a series of hardships in 1970s Odessa, Tex. After oil rigger Dale Strickland is charged with the rape of 14-year-old Gloria Ram rez, the town is split between those who believe he is guilty and those who believe she brought it on herself and who cast bigoted aspersions about Gloria and her family. Mary Rose Whitehead, pregnant with her second child and feeling alienated from her rancher husband, envisions a brutal comeuppance for Strickland and bonds unexpectedly with the reclusive Corrine Shepard, a recent widow who shares in her outrage ("as if there might have been some moral ambiguity, Corrine thinks bitterly, if Gloria Ram rez had been sixteen, or white"). Ten-year-old Debra Ann, whose mother abandoned her and whose father lets her wander freely, leaves behind imaginary friendships to help Jesse Belden, a luckless Vietnam vet. With Mary Rose as a major witness for the prosecution, Gloria eventually gets her day in court, though the outcome doesn't please anyone. Great historical story about Texans &Mexico
The story begins with a Mexican 14yo girl being raped and abused by a young man. She wakes the following morning and walks 3 miles to a farmhouse. The woman Mary Rose lets her in tell her daughter to call the sheriff Dept and the man who raped Glory shows up demanding that Mary Rose let her come out. Sheriff arrives arrests the man but the town is taking the mans side bc of their bigotry and hatred for Mexicans. It follows the woman Mary Rose to the home she rents in town bc she’s being targeted by the whites for testifying against the man. The neighborhood is full of women who were married too young pregnant and oppressed in this small town. It speaks mostly of the oppression of women and minorities the bigotry and racism that are the hallmark of Odessa Texas and the hypocrisy of their religious beliefs and the pain of being oppressed
A lot left open
The bulk of this book is character building. The characters are great but it lacked an interesting plot. I wanted revenge, or triumph. Something!
In Valentine, Latinos used as props by the European immigrant, again.
This novel begins with a hollow bigoted white-gaze depiction of the aftermath of a raped American girl, whom the immigrants describe as Mexican. From there, it’s all about the folks who see her as an immigrant in her own country. So it’s not about her but about them. Then it ends with her leaving her country, her ancestral lands, to the European immigrant blowhards who raped it all. Yet Another “American dirt” tale, told by yet another European-American, signifying nothing.
