The Midnight Sea
Publisher Description
They are the light against the darkness.
The steel against the necromancy of the Druj.
And they use demons to hunt demons….
Nazafareen lives for revenge. A girl of the isolated Four-Legs Clan, all she knows about the King's elite Water Dogs is that they bind wicked creatures called daevas to protect the empire from the Undead. But when scouts arrive to recruit young people with the gift, she leaps at the chance to join their ranks. To hunt the monsters that killed her sister.
Scarred by grief, she's willing to pay any price, even if it requires linking with a daeva named Darius. Human in body, he's possessed of a terrifying power, one that Nazafareen controls. But the golden cuffs that join them have an unwanted side effect. Each experiences the other's emotions, and human and daeva start to grow dangerously close.
As they pursue a deadly foe across the arid waste of the Great Salt Plain to the glittering capital of Persepolae, unearthing the secrets of Darius's past along the way, Nazafareen is forced to question his slavery—and her own loyalty to the empire. But with an ancient evil stirring in the north, and a young conqueror sweeping in from the west, the fate of an entire civilization may be at stake…

Loved it!
I’m so glad I grabbed this book. Usually, free books tend to be pretty awful, but I’m so glad to say this book isn’t one of them. I started and finished it one day—every scene was so fast paced and had so much action that I tore through the Midnight Sea without stopping. Every character was believable and so compelling (even the villains!), especially Darius, Tommas, and Nazafareen. The MC Nazafareen was fantastic. I loved her so so much right from the beginning, and Kat Ross didn’t let her fall into the same boring tropes that I see so much in YA and NA. She was realistic, determined, and described her emotions in the narrative without the tropey, sexist pitfalls that usually come with them. Her romance was so compelling, mostly because it felt like it had such a solid foundation (real friendship, no insta love!). I honestly wish I had better words for how happily surprised I was by this book. So exciting, amazing AMAZING world. The daevas were insanely cool, and so was the way Ross described the bond between them and their humans. I loved connecting all the places/people in this book with their real-world counterparts, especially Alexander the Great and Xerxes. Such a fun read. I’ll definitely be picking up the next one. Really wanted to leave a review for the author the moment I finished it—you could tell how much care and research she put into making the book, and it really makes the world feel alive
5 stars. Get this book, give it a shot! Can’t recommend it enough
Great fantasy novel
I loved reading this book, what more do you want in a fantasy novel? Action, magic, deception, romance and fast pace. The only criticism I have is that it could have been longer! Thank goodness there are two sequels.
Blood of the prophet
The first book was good so I bought the second one but it is so blood thirsty that I can’t read it. The torture is very detailed and I’m not for violence so I won’t be reading any more of your books. Good for those who love violence and core
