Publisher Description
Some people are born to greatness, others have greatness thrust upon them… and some are just drawn like that.
As the creator of a popular new comics franchise, Jane Maxwell knows a thing or two about heroes, but has no illusions of being one herself. All of that is shattered, however, when she finds herself swept into a parallel world—one where her characters are real, and her parallel self is their leader.
There’s just one problem: that Jane is missing.
Under the growing danger of a deadly new villain named UltraViolet, the team has no choice but to ask Jane to do the impossible: step into the suit left behind by her double, become the hero that they need her to be. But with budding powers that threaten to overwhelm her, a family she only half-recognizes, and the parallel version of her dead wife staring her in the face, navigating her alternate life proves harder than she ever imagined…
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Gott (The Lady of Souls) kicks off her superpowered Hopefuls series with the exhilarating origin story of comics writer turned superhero Jane Maxwell, aka Captain Lumen. Jane is recently widowed and has just been fired from her dream job at Quantum Zero Comics. Her old friend Cal introduces her to a group of costumed heroes shockingly similar to those in her comic Hopefuls, which she based on games played by her childhood friends. Fleeing from a surprise attack by mutant raptors, Jane is transported to a parallel world almost identical to her own, save for two vital facts: her friends (and parallel Jane) are the superheroes they pretended to be as kids, and her late wife is alive. Original Jane has been recruited by this universe to fill in for her missing counterpart in the battle against a deadly supervillain. But she doesn't have an ounce of power to her name or so she thinks. Gott aims true in this action-packed, emotionally resonant series opener about hope and heroism in the face of overwhelming loss. Fans of superhero stories are sure to be entertained. (BookLife)

Super Awesome
I knew I was going to love this. I mean: superheroes, a f/f romance with a heartbreaking ending, a heroine who is a comic book writer and artist, plenty of humor to break some tense moments... I mean, this is Liz bait. And I loved all of those things, but I especially loved the total heart that beats throughout this book. Not to mention the slowed down, comic panel drawings that punctuate that narration. Gott deftly carries fast-paced prose, weaving panels through so naturally, you barely notice the tense change, and really appreciate the picture she paints with words.
"Jane" is innovative, exciting, and one of the best books I've read this year. I can't wait for more Heroes of Hope!
